Coeur d’Alene Lake is one of the few places in the United States that has a sustainable land-locked Chinook Salmon fishery. In 1982, Chinook Salmon were stocked in the lake and now the fishery has grown to be one of the most popular in the Northwest. The catch rate in the spring and early summer are good with the average Chinook weighing in at 3 to 8 pounds. However, it is not uncommon to catch 10 and 11 pound fish as well.
If you have never fished for Northern Pike, then you are in for a treat. These aggressive fish are the apex warm water predator in Coeur d’Alene Lake. The literal translation of their Latin name is “water wolf” and it is a perfect description of them. These ferocious fighters can really light up a rod and reel! They strike hard and put up an incredible fight!
Coeur d’Alene Lake is world renowned for its ability to grow BIG Northern Pike. It’s not uncommon for several fish each year top 30 pounds. In fact, the current Idaho state record for Northern Pike was caught here in 2007. The 39-pound, 13 ounce trophy pike was caught in Cougar Bay. Because of the lake’s habitat diversity and food base, it is able to produce big fish.
